Self-aligning ball bearings are used primarily in simple bearing arrangements, they are most often used as locating bearings. They are useful mainly for short shafts where only slight thermal elongations are to be expected (small shaft elongations are compensated by the axial clearance of the bearing itself). Self-aligning ball bearings are equipped with seals placed in the bearing on both sides, which fulfill the function of protection and the function of additional sealing. A self-aligning ball bearing pairs with the housing to form a self-aligning unit, ready for installation.

Ball bearings are available in the following hole diameters:
- 8 mm to 140 mm (metric)
- 1/2 "to 4" (inch)

Variations of inner rings:
- inner ring extended on one side
- inner ring 2-sided extended

These bearings, like other bearings, are mounted on the shaft journal with grub screws, an eccentric ring or an adapter sleeve. Self-aligning ball bearings can accommodate radial loads, axial loads and mixed loads.
